SUMMARY:THE TESTAMENT (Israel)
DESCRIPTION:Based upon a book and facts\, THE TESTAMENT is about Yoel\, a meticulous historian\, in the midst of a widely covered legal battle with powerful forces in Austria\, concerning a brutal massacre of Jews that took place toward the end of WWII in the village of Lendsorf. An influential family of industrialists on whose land the murder took place\, is planning to build a real estate project on the very same land. Yoel suspects that their aim is to bury the affair for good\, but has trouble finding the conclusive evidence that would stop the project. \nWhile investigating the incident Yoel examines classified testimonies of Holocaust survivors\, and to his shock and surprise he finds a testimony given by his mother\, a testimony he didn’t know existed. In her testimony she confesses to a substantial secret from her past. \nYoel\, who’s conducting a double-investigation\, personal and scientific\, is trapped between walls of silence – on one side\, denial of the Holocaust on the part of the villagers\, and on the other\, his mother’s silence regarding her past. As a historian with an unshakable commitment to the truth\, he decides to persevere with his investigations even at the cost of ruining his personal and professional life. \nWriter|Drector: Amichai Greenberg\nGenre: Drama\nRunning Time: 88 minutes\nDistributor: Menemsha Films\nCountry: Austria | Israel\nLanguage: Hebrew | German | English | Yiddish\nRating: N|R\nStarring: Ori Pfeffer\, Rivka Gur\, Hagit Dasberg \n  \nFESTIVALS: Israel\, Israeli Cinema Day; Italy\, Venice Film Festival; South Korea\, Busan International Film Festival; Poland\, Warsaw Film Festival; USA\, Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival \nOfficial Website w|Trailer and Press Kit: https://www.menemshafilms.com/testament

SUMMARY:EL ACOMPANANTE / THE COMPANION (Panama)
DESCRIPTION:Academy Award submission for Best Foreign Language Film: Cuba: ‘The Companion’ \nNOTE:  Start time is 9:30 AM.  Co-Sponsor with CINEMA DIVERSE \n1988\, Cuba\, those infected with HIV or suffering from AIDS were given free room\, board and medical treatment at a beautiful facility called “Los Cocos”. Except for the criminals who shared prison cells\, the patients shared apartments with other patients. These apartments were so comfortable that some healthy people wanted to have AIDS so they could live in such conditions. But the patients were also treated as prisoners\, living under military guard. One day a week they were allowed a day of freedom when they could leave the facility\, but they had to have a companion assigned to be with them at all times. \n“The Companion”/ “El acompañante” is a very Cuban film because the government’s treatment and control over the spread of AIDS were very particular to Cuba. The story is based on historical facts: Cuba was indeed the only nation in the world that mandated universal HIV testing and enforced isolation of all HIV carriers. \nAfter failing a doping test\, Horacio Romero -a world-class Cuban boxing champion- has no other choice but to serve the sentence. His fate is in Los Cocos\, a sanatorium under military rule where HIV patients are compulsorily confined\, with the exception of a weekly pass to visit their families under the supervision of personal wardens called “companions”. \nRunning Time:  104 min \nDistributor:  Habanero Producoes Artisticas Ltda \n See the trailer here.

SUMMARY:TIGER THEORY (Czech Republic)
DESCRIPTION:Jan (Jiří Bartoška)\, a veterinarian\, has had enough. The last drop was the death of his father-in-law who\, just like him\, ran out of strength and patience. Everything in his life\, old age and finally even his death\, the manner and the place of his grave\, had always been decided by the grandmother (Iva Janžurová). She never listened to any of his wishes and desires in good faith that only she knows what is best for him. And so\, quite unfortunately for him\, she took the best care she thought he needed. \nIt was dawning on Jan that he’s taking the same path. His wife Olga (Eliška Balzerová) follows the same rule of a small yard and a long whip and is persuaded that she alone is responsible for her husband’s happiness. Jan realises that he cannot and does not want to go on like this. If he does not do anything\, he will end up like his father-in-law. One day he finds a way to break free and regain control over his life. His revolt is quite unconventional. The initial inspiration comes from his patient\, a parrot with suspected Alzheimer disease. It is also thanks to this parrot that Jan decides to set on a journey to fulfill what he thinks are his dreams. Of course such a journey cannot be easy\, it includes a flock of goats\, later on a herd of cows\, a psychiatric hospital\, a ride on a raft and life on a boat. \nJan’s journey to freedom influences the lives of his children and their partners. His daughter Olinka (Táňa Vilhelmová) has taken over her mother’s method while his daughter-in-law Alena (Pavla Beretová) manages to resist the pressure of the family tradition and choses her own way – more liberal\, modern\, human. Each approach has a corresponding effect on their partners (Jiří Havelka\, Jakub Kohák). \nCast:  Jiří Bartoška\, Eliška Balzerová\, Iva Janžurová\, Vilhelmová\, Pavla Beretová\, Jiří Havelka\, Jakub Kohák\nGenre:  Comedy\nRunning Time:  109 min\nDistributor:  Picture Tree International GmbH

SUMMARY:MIDNIGHT RETURN: STORY OF BILLY HAYES & TURKEY - with guests
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nJoin us for an EXCLUSIVE Q&A screening of Midnight Return: The Story of Billy Hayes and Turkey at Camelot Theaters! \nAfter his ingenious escape from a Turkish prison in 1975\, Billy Hayes arrived home to a hero’s welcome\, instant celebrity and within a week had a book and movie deal for his story. From the moment it stunned the world at the Cannes Film Festival in 1978\, ‘Midnight Express’ cemented its place in film history as an artistic and financial success\, before becoming an indelible part of pop culture. But its lasting impact has been on Turkish people worldwide who still condemn the film as racist and blame Billy Hayes for defaming them and their country. In an effort to clear his conscience and re-visit the scenes of his youth\, Billy Hayes attempts a rapprochement with the Turkish nation but is refused entry. It is only when he receives an invitation from a most ironic source that he returns to Turkey and faces a nation still haunted by the film and his own demons as well. \n  \nBilly Hayes and writer/director Sally Sussman will be attending a Q&A on July 24th at 7:30 pm only! This special screening is a fundraiser for The Desert Film Society and Palm Springs Cultural Center. \nTickets available at the Camelot box office or at eventbrite \nhttps://midnightreturn.eventbrite.com \n$13 in advance or at Camelot box office \n(note limited seating) \nMovie Time: 7:30 pm \nMonday July 24th\, 2017 \n  \n\nDocumentary  |  USA\n99 minutes | Seventh Art Releasing\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
