SUMMARY:AMANDA
DESCRIPTION:AMANDA – 107 min \nVincent Lacoste leads Mikhaël Hers’s poignant new feature about trauma and its aftershocks.  At first\, David (Lacoste) is just beginning to figure out life in his early twenties\, helping his sister (Ophélia Kolb) raise her 7-year-old daughter\, Amanda (Isaure Multrier)\, and gently initiating a romance with a pianist (Stacy Martin\, Nymphomaniac).   This era of placidity is brutally ruptured\, and a grief-stricken David must assume new responsibility for Amanda as a potential guardian.  With an understated directorial touch\, Hers creates a touching story of resilience deepened by delicately nuanced performances.  Vincent Lacoste was nominated for a César Award for Best Actor for his breathtaking\, astonishingly quiet and introspective performance as David\, a sweet\, carefree young man who suddenly has the responsibilities of adulthood thrust upon him.  Making her screen debut\, Isaure Multrier\, is nothing short of remarkable as his 7-year-old niece.  Nominated for César Awards for Best Actor and Original Score and honored with the Magic Lantern Award in Venice\, and both the Best Screenplay Award and the Grand Prize at the Tokyo International Film Festival. \nThis film is part of CINEMA FRANCAIS PS festival.  Ticket purchase ($13) available now on www.CinemaFrancaisPS.com or in Camelot’s lobby Wednesdays thru Sundays after 12:00 noon.   DFS discount to $11 applies w/code previously mailed to DFS members.  You must provide ‘promo’ code on line or in lobby since Camelot staff does not have these codes.\n

SUMMARY:IN SAFE HANDS / PUPILLE showing with UPSET BODY / CORPS CONTRARIE
DESCRIPTION:IN SAFE HANDS (PUPILLE) – 110 min \nJeanne Herry crafts a story stemming from a delicate two-and-a-half-month state of limbo for a newborn child\, Théo\, who becomes a ward of the state after his mother gives him up for adoption at birth. In Safe Hands choreographs parallel strands of action: the search for potential parents undertaken by the social workers managing Théo’s case (Sandrine Kiberlain and Clotilde Mollet)\, the care and vigilance required for Théo’s foster father (Gilles Lellouche) to properly nurture him in the interim\, and the nine-year journey of adoption applications and fractured marriage embarked upon by a possible mother (Élodie Bouchez). Within this institutional balancing act\, Herry’s characters swing between intense determination\, uncertainty\, and\, ultimately\, joy: all par for the course while seeking the proper equilibrium for a person’s life to begin. SUMMARY:MURER - ANATOMY OF A TRIAL (Austria\, Luxembourg)
DESCRIPTION:SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PREMIERE \nOn the basis of original records\, MURER – ANATOMY OF A TRIAL reconstructs the 1963 proceedings against Franz Murer\, a wealthy Austrian farmer with a sterling reputation\, that took place in Graz. \nThis respected local politician and family man was in charge of the Vilnius ghetto from 1941 to 1943\, where its residents called him the “Butcher of Vilnius.” Solely 600 of the 80\,000 Jews who originally lived there survived Nazi rule. \nSurvivors came from around the world to testify at the trial\, leaving little doubt of Murer’s guilt. This resulted in one of the most serious scandals of Austria’s Second Republic for which the justice system\, press and governmental policy were responsible. \nIn an era of nationalism on the rise and less reserve in the face of ideologies that supposedly were defeated long ago\, the Murer case is depressingly topical. The film shows how little weight truth and justice possess when competing with the interests of political power. \n This film is part of “Tales of Europe” –  a program of UniFrance and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy. \nGenre:  Drama\nRunning Time:  110 min\nLanguages:  German\, Yiddish\, Hebrew\n3 Wins\, 6 Nominations \nTrailer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnXI1br7oQE \nCamelot Theatres doors unlock at 9:30 AM for complimentary refreshments.  The film begins promptly at 10:00.  A facilitated discussion will follow the screening. \nTickets are free to Desert Film Society members.  Non-members pay $15 at the door.

SUMMARY:THE ORCHESTRA CLASS (France)
DESCRIPTION:WEST COAST PREMIERE \nWhen violinist Simon Daoud is hired to teach the violin to a class of unruly junior high school students in an immigrant suburb of Paris\, his first instinct is to run back to his rarefied world of classical string quartets.  His mission to teach these twelve loudmouths to perform the violin parts in Rimsky-Korsakov’s  Cheherazade at the Paris Philharmonic at the end of the school year seems beyond impossible.  Yet as he gets to know the kids and their families\, Simon’s priorities shift and he determines to do everything in his power to get them to the Philharmonic.  While the movie clock is kept ticking by this exciting objective\, the film’s heartwarming core is in its portrayal of the diverse group of kids rought together in the orchestra class.  Writer-director Rachid Hami combines a documentary sensibility with a knack for bringing out his young actors’ comedic flair and dramatic intensity.  In this regard\, Orchestra Class’s major discovery is Alfred Renely\, the fifteen-year-old actor who shines as Arnold\, a quiet boy who discovers he is a natural by taking his violin up to the roof of his housing project every night to practice. \nTHE ORCHESTRA (La Melodie) is included in the 2019 YOUNG FRENCH CINEMA  program of UniFrance and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the U.S. \nWriter|Director: Rachid Hami\nScreenplay:  Guy Laurent\, Valérie Zenatti and Rachid Hami\nGenre: Comedy\, Drama\, Music\nRunning Time: 102 minutes\nDistributor: Unifrance\nCountry: France\nLanguage: French w|English Subtitles\nRating: N|R\nStarring: Kad Merad\, Samir Guesmi\, Renely Alfred\nPremiere:  West Coast \nFESTIVALS: Italy\, Venice Film Festival; Colombia\, Festival de cine francés de Colombia; South Korea\, Pusan International Film Festival; United Arab Emirates\, Dubai International Film Festival; Sweden\, Göteborg Film Festival; Poland\, Transatlantyk Film Festival; USA\, Film Society of Lincoln Center \n“While Algerian-born director Rachid Hami’s film may tread familiar territory it refreshingly eschews the simplistic sentimental cinematic notion of ‘musical misfits make good’ and strikes an engaging harder-edged chord with its story of dour French-Algerian classical violinist who attempts to encourage\, tame and ultimately inspire a raucous and resolutely rude Parisian music class.” … Rotten Tomatoes \nWebsite w|Trailer and Press Kit: https://en.unifrance.org/movie/42324/orchestra-class \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:DEAR FREDY (Israel)
DESCRIPTION:Co-Sponsor with CINEMA DIVERSE. \nPlease note film will start promptly at 9:30 AM \n  \nA Heroic Gay Jewish Sportsman Who Ended Up in Auschwitz \nFredy Hirsch was born in Germany\, a proud Jew and openly gay man he was 19 years old when the Nuremberg Laws were published\, he fled from Germany to the Czech Republic which was conquered by the Nazis.  He began activities in the Czech Republic as a sports teacher in Jewish youth club\, and soon became his students’ object of admiration.  With the deportation of the Jews to Ghetto Terezin\, Fredy was appointed head of the youth department and dealt with over than 4\,000 youth.  When he arrived in Auschwitz\, Fredy did not succumb to despair.  He persuaded Mengele to set up a daycare center for children and youth and granted some 600 children their final moments of happiness.  It might be that in Auschwitz\, for the first time in his life\, Fredy Hirsch didn’t experience Homophobia.  He had a lover\, he was out and people loved him for all the good he did.  Together with members of the underground in Auschwitz\, he planned a revolt that never came to pass\, following his death\, which remains a mystery\, and which this film attempts to reveal.  The story of Fredy Hirsch is another link in the history of the gay community. The film combines interviews\, archival materials and animation. \nIsrael 2017 | 74 minutes | Hebrew\, English\, Czech | English subtitles \nDirector: Rubi Gat \nProducers; Rubi Gat\, Sahar ben Hur \nEditor: Erez Laufer \nOriginal Music: Ido Goldberg \nSound Design: Ronen Nagel \nArt Director: Yael Ozsinay \nAnimation design: Mind The Gap Animation \n

DESCRIPTION:With buoyant energy\, Gilles Lellouche choreographs and directs a stellar ensemble in pursuit of grace and discarded dreams—that is\, a group of varyingly coordinated middle-aged men who find an outlet in synchronized swimming. As he gets to know his fellow swimmers\, played by Guillaume Canet\, Benoît Poelvoorde\, Jean-Hugues Anglade\, and Philippe Katerine\, he uncovers shared frustrations and disappointments\, but also hope in a hobby that’s less about skill than teamwork. SUMMARY:GASPARD AT THE WEDDING (France/Belgium)
DESCRIPTION:SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PREMIERE \nShortly after their chance meeting\, Gaspard asks Laura if she will accompany him to his family home and pose as his girlfriend at his father’s second wedding. At this point\, viewers will probably assume they’re dealing with a familiar and delightful trope of romantic comedy: the fake couple will become a real one\, and everyone will live happily ever after.  And while that isn’t altogether false\, Antony Cordier’s Gaspard at the Wedding is a far more surprising entertainment than one might expect\, both sophisticated and eccentric.  For one thing\, the family home in question is a working zoo\, complete with tigers\, monkeys\, and two-headed caribous\, and the family doesn’t always know how to draw the line between animal instinct and human behavior.  A case in point is Coline\, Gaspard’s sister\, a beautiful young woman who walks around wearing a bear skin because she believes she is part bear.  She is also in love with her brother. Cordier man ages not only to make these wacky situations believable\, but to give them real emotional depth\, delivering an unexpectedly poignant romance. \nWriter|Director: Antony Cordier\nGenre:  Comedy/Romance\nRunning Time:  103 min\nDistributor: UniFrance\nCountry: France | Belgium\nLanguage: French w|English Subtitles\nRating: N|R\nStarring: Félix Moati\, Laetitia Dosch\, Guillaume Gouix\nPremiere: Southern California \nFESTIVALS: France: Festival du film indépendant de Bordeaux\, Festival de Villefranche-sur-Saône\, Arras Film Festival\, Festival du Film de Sarlat\, Festival du Film de Muret\, Festival du Film Francophone d’Albi\, Festival Les Hérault du Cinéma; USA: New Orleans Film Festival\, Sacramento Film Festival\, Chicago European Union Film Festival; Italy: Rendez Vous Nuovo Cinema Francese\, Lecce Film Festival; Russia\, Moscow Film Festival; Austria\, Vienna Film Festival; Romania\, Transilvania International Film Festival; Brazil: Festival de Cinema Francês\, Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival; Norway\, Norwegian International Film Festival; Germany\, Hamburg Film Festival; Venezuela\, Festival de cine francés \nOfficial Website w|Trailer and Press Kit: https://en.unifrance.org/movie/42856/gaspard-at-the-wedding \n  \nGASPARD AT THE WEDDING  is included in the 2019 YOUNG FRENCH CINEMA  program of UniFrance and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the U.S.

Guy-Blaché started her career as a secretary to Léon Gaumont and in 1896\, at 23\, was inspired to make her own film called La Fée aux Choux (The Cabbage Fairy)\, one of the first narrative films ever made. \nOver the span of her career\, she wrote\, produced or directed 1\,000 films\, including 150 with synchronized sound during the silent era. Her work includes comedies\, westerns and dramas\, as well as films with groundbreaking subject matter such as child abuse\, immigration\, Planned Parenthood\, and female empowerment. She also etched a place in history by making the earliest known surviving narrative film with an all-black cast. After a decade of making films at Gaumont she had a second decade-long career in the U.S.\, where she built and ran her own studio in Fort Lee\, New Jersey. \nPamela Green has dedicated more than eight years of research in order to discover the real story of Alice Guy-Blaché (1873-1968)  highlighting not only her pioneering contributions to the birth of cinema but also her acclaim as a creative force and entrepreneur in the earliest years of movie-making. Green interviews Patty Jenkins\, Diablo Cody\, Ben Kingsley\, Geena Davis\, Ava DuVernay\, Michel Hazanavicius\, Lake Bell\, Jodie Foster\, Julie Taymor\, Agnes Varda\, Drake Stutesman and Julie Delpy to name just a few who comment on Guy-Blache’s innovations. Green discovered rare footage of televised interviews and long archived audio interviews which can be heard for the first time in Be Natural\, which allows Alice Guy-Blaché to tell her own story.\n\nBE NATURAL premiered at the Cannes\, Telluride\, New York\, Deauville and London Film Festivals in 2018.   Film opened in NY and LA on April 26\, 2019. \nWATCH THE TRAILER \nGenre:  Documentary \nRunning Time:  103 min \nDistributor:  Zeitgeist Films \n\nDrake Stutesman is an adjunct professor at New York University\, teaching theoretical film costume.  She edits the peer-reviewed\, cinema and media journal\, Framework. Her work has been published by\, among others\, the British Film Institute\, the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles.)\, the Museum of Modern Art (New York)\, andBookforum.  Recent work includes the forthcoming book\, Hat: Origins\, Language\, Style (Reaktion Books\, 2019)\, and essays on melodrama\, silent cinema\, Japanese film\, 1960s fashion\, subjectivity in biography\, and costume scholarship.  She is writing a biography of silent film era costume designer\, Clare West\, and a monograph on milliner/couturier\, Mr. John.  She is on the boards of the Fort Lee Film Commission and the Barrymore Film Center\, at Fort Lee\, New Jersey\, the town where the film industry began in the U.S.
