SUMMARY:YOU WILL REMEMBER ME (Canada)
DESCRIPTION:Edouard (Remy Girard\, Les Invasion Barbares)\, a public figure and retired History teacher\, is slowly starting to lose his memory. Accustomed to speaking on all the stands\, he must make himself more discreet\, even if he believes he still has a lot to say. Edouard’s son-in law hires his daughter Bérénice (Karelle Tremblay\, Death of a Ladies Man) to help watch over him\, even though she is a little lost herself. Their relationship will lead Edouard to revisit a time from his personal history that he had chosen to forget\, and Bérénice to find meaning in her own life. The drama intensifies when Edouard’s wife can no longer stand the effects the dementia has on her husband\, and must choose between staying by his side until the end or spending the remaining years on her own terms. \nJulie Lebreton\, France Castel and David Boutin co-star in this film that Jonathan Romney of Screen Daily called “compelling” and remarked\, “Where the film really connects is in its acting\, notably in the interplay between Tremblay’s thoughtful\, reserved performance and Girard’s thorny but winning characterization\, which starts out in familiar cantankerous ‘sacred monster’ mode\, but gradually unfolds its nuances.” \n\n\n FESTIVALS / AWARDS: \n\n\n\n\nWon\, Limestone Financial People’s Choice Award 2021\nBest Feature\nWashington DC International Film Fest \nFilmFest DC \nSarajevo Film Festival \nKingston Canadian Film Festival 2021  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLENGTH: 108 min\nCOUNTRY: Canada\nGENRE: Drama\nLANGUAGE: French w/English subtitles\nDIRECTOR: Eric Tessier\nCAST: Rémy Girard\, Julie Le Breton\, Karelle Tremblay\, France Castel\, David Boutin\nCREW: SCREENWRITER: Eric Tessier; CINEMATAGRAPHER: Pierre Gill C.S.C.; EDITOR: Jean-François Bergeron; MUSIC: Martin Léon; PRODUCER: Christian Larouche \n

SUMMARY:PAUL NEWMAN\, BEHIND BLUE EYES! (France) + 2 shorts
DESCRIPTION:His beauty\, masculinity and intelligence\, and of course the color of his eyes\, have followed Paul Newman throughout his life. Annoyed by the incessant references to his apparent sex appeal\, the actor did everything he could to change the perception of him as a seducer. However\, even in his most unsympathetic roles\, he continued to captivate audiences around the world.\n\nConsistently challenging both the stereotypes and the celebrations of Hollywood\, Paul Newman preferred to exercise his freedom of thought. After enrolling in the Actors Studio in the early 1950’s\, Newman had played in over 60 films\, working with some of the most iconic directors in film history. Although relatively under the radar\, his career as a director\, with a dozen films under his belt\, reflects the diversity and richness of his artistic vision.\n\nModest\, shy\, secretive\, and determined to protect his own privacy\, Newman did not give himself up easily and often used his humor to distance himself from the media frenzy. We will go through his films\, his passions\, his political views and civic battles\, to discover the life and personality of the actor\, the family man\, and the philanthropist\, hiding behind his blue eyes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDirected by Pierre-Francois Gaudry | France | 52 minutes \n\nEnglish subtitles\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nS H O W I N G   W I T H:   \nEXTRA INNINGS (9 min) – Director & writer John Gray.  A reporter interviews a major league baseball manager in an attempt to uncover secrets. \nOR\, THE WHALE (7 min) – Director\, Writer\, Producer\, Mark Kiefer.  Fictitious meeting btwn Herman Melville & his editor/publisher. \n

SUMMARY:PERSIAN LESSONS (Russia\, Germany\, Belarus)
DESCRIPTION:Gilles\, a young Jewish Belgian man\, is arrested in 1942 by the SS and sent to a concentration camp in Germany.  He narrowly avoids execution by swearing to the guards that he is not Jewish\, but Persian. This lie temporarily saves him\, but then Gilles is assigned a seemingly untenable mission: to teach Persian to Koch\, the officer in charge of the camp’s kitchen\, who dreams of opening a restaurant in Persia (Iran) once the war is over. Gilles finds himself having to invent a language he doesn’t know\, word by word.\n\nAs the unusual relationship between the two men begins to incite jealousy and suspicion\, Gilles becomes acutely aware that one false move could expose his swindle.\n\n\n“Persian Lessons is easily the pick: it’s a hugely compelling\, highly original Holocaust drama” …Daily Mail\n\n“Director Vadim Perelman creates a skillfully unfussy period style\, avoiding genre cliches to focus on characters who are finely brought to life by an excellent cast.” …  Shadows On The Wall\n\n\nOfficial Academy Award Submission\, later disqualified due to the majority of individuals involved in making the film not coming from Belarus.\n\n\nDirector:  Vadim Perelman  (House Of Sand And Fog).\nRunning Time:  127 min\nGenres:  History / Drama\nLanguages:  German\, French\, Persian with ENG ST

SUMMARY:LUZZU (Malta)
DESCRIPTION:IN THEATERS STARTING\nOctober 15 in New York\nand October 22 in Los Angeles\nDesert Film Society – Oct 2\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCHECK OUT NEW TRAILER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWINNER: Sundance Film Festival-Special Jury Prize for the lead actor\nOfficial selection: New Directors/New Films\n\nA hardworking Maltese fisherman\, Jesmark is faced with an agonizing choice. He can repair his leaky luzzu – a traditional\, multicolored wooden fishing boat – in the hopes of eking out a meager living at sea for his wife and newborn son\, just as his father and grandfather did before him. Or he can decommission it in exchange for an EU payout and cast his lot with a sinister black-market operation that is decimating the Mediterranean fish population and the livelihoods of the local families who depend on it. Luzzu won a Sundance Jury Prize for its nonprofessional lead actor Jesmark Scicluna\, a real-life Maltese fisherman\, and heralds the arrival of writer-director-editor Alex Camilleri. His gripping film operates in the neorealist tradition of Luchino Visconti\, Roberto Rosselini\, and the Dardenne brothers and calls to mind the work of Ramin Bahrani (Man Push Cart\, The White Tiger)\, also a producer of the film.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPRESS:\n\n“A neorealist telling in the tradition of the Dardenne brothers.” – Ryan Lattanzio\, Indiewire \n“Cinematic magic. Stunning newcomer Jesmark Scicluna… will remind you of Daniel Day-Lewis.” – Kurt Brokaw\, The Independent Magazine \n“An affecting neorealist drama… indebted to the stripped-bare postwar Italian cinema of Visconti and Rosselini… but Luzzu’s brawny\, sun-broiled shoulders can sustain the weight of its influences.” – Guy Lodge\, Variety \n“A moving tale of real-world strife… part observational drama\, part social thriller.” – Jordan Mintzer\, The Hollywood Reporter \n“A ravishing portrait of tradition in transition… teems with old-world beauty.” – Carlos Aguilar\, RogerEbert.com \n“The kind of film Roberto Rossellini would have made if he were still alive today.” – Jordan Ruimy\, World of Reel \n“A simple\, yet beautiful film due to this sense of place\, Luzzu highlights a story that’s rooted in tradition and particularity.” – Michael Frank\, The Film Stage \n“Manages to be both self-contained\, in its depiction of an embattled community\, but also unexpectedly far-reaching in its themes.” – Wendy Ide\, Screen Daily
