SUMMARY:FAREWELL MR. HAFFMANN (France)
DESCRIPTION:Occupied Paris\, 1941: all members of the Jewish community are instructed to come forward and identify themselves to authorities. Dedicated jeweler Joseph Haffmann (Auteuil)\, fearing the worst\, arranges for his family to flee the city and offers his employee François Mercier (Gilles Lellouche) the chance to take over his store until the conflict subsides. But his own attempts to escape are thwarted\, and Haffmann is forced to seek his assistant’s protection. \nIt’s a risky proposition for both men\, and one that Mercier’s wife Blanche (a wonderful Sara Giraudeau) is skeptical of. As the couple move in to the Haffmann home\, the agreement turns into a Faustian bargain\, one that will forever change the fate of all… \nSuperbly directed by Cavayé\, FAREWELL\, MR. HAFFMANN masterfully guides the viewer through the world of Vichy France\, where lives are irrevocably shaped by the twin scourges of war and the black market. Rich in moral complexity and empathy\, with several twists too good to spoil\, this is grand\, big-screen adult entertainment at its finest. \nGenre: Drama\nRun time: 116 min\nCountry: France\nLanguage: French w/English subtitles\nPremiere:  Southern California\nDirector: Fred Cavaye\nPrincipal Cast:  Daniel Auteuil\, Gilles Lellouche\, Sara Giraudeau\,\nNikolai Kinski\nWebsite:\nDistributor: Menemsha\nTrailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynh8hXoLza8 \nDesert Film Society warmly thanks our sponsor\, Lyn Chernis. \nTickets:  Free to 2022 DFS members.  Non-members $15 cash at the door.  Complimentary coffee & pastries. \nCovid Restrictions:  Photo ID\, Proof of full vaccination including booster shot\,  Seating is socially distanced.  Please allow 2 empty seats between you and another party and do not sit directly behind anyone.

SUMMARY:FILM\, THE LIVING RECORD OF OUR MEMORY (Canada/Spain)
DESCRIPTION:Why are we still able to watch moving images captured over 125 years ago? As we move ever further into the digital age\, our audiovisual heritage seems to be taken increasingly for granted. However\, much of our filmed history and cinema has already been lost forever. Film archivists\, curators\, technicians and filmmakers from around the world explain what film preservation is and why it is needed. Our protagonists are custodians of film whose work behind the scenes safeguards the survival of motion pictures. It is a task they undertake based on their closely held belief in the artistic and cultural value of the moving image\, in tune with a shared mantra that a film might one day transform someone’s life. This documentary is an homage to them all and sheds some light on their critical undertaking.\n\n“A deep dive into the world of film archives and individual archivists\, this film tracks the history of film preservation from its nascent stages\, when the very notion was thought frivolous\, to the present day when organizations like the BFI maintain vast facilities lined by row upon row of film cannisters. The archivist’s gift and ambition – to unearth lost treasures to expand the film canon and uncover obscure histories – is highlighted by glimpses of recent prize discoveries\, such as Mother Dao and directors like Albert Samama Chikli and Germaine Dulac (any hungry film fan will want to set about hunting them down).” — Sunil Chauhan\, Eye For Film\nGenre  Documentary\nRun time:  119 min\nCountry:  Canada/Spain\nLanguage:  English\nPremiere:  Southern California\nDirector:  Inés Toharia Terán\nWriter:  Inés Toharia Terán\nProducers:  Paul Cadieux | Isaac Garcia Llombart\nComposer: Robert Marcel Lepage\nCinematographer:  Daniel Vilar\nDistributor:  Kino \nTickets:  Free to 2022 DFS members. \n

SUMMARY:BOULEVARD! A HOLLYWOOD STORY (Filmmaker guests)
DESCRIPTION:When Gloria Swanson\, the iconic star of Sunset Boulevard\, saw an opportunity to parlay her silent film glory into a new phase of her career\, she began to envision a musical stage adaptation of her most famous film. \nEnter\, Dickson Hughes and Richard Stapley\, two struggling songwriters (and romantic couple) looking for their big break. The men find themselves whisked away by Swanson to a sumptuous house in Palm Springs\, where the trio set to creating the musical from the ground up. As the days wear on\, a triangle begins to take hold that goes beyond mere creative partnership. \nFrom the dark alleys of L.A. to the desert nirvana of Palm Springs to the posh New York theater world\, BOULEVARD! A HOLLYWOOD STORY is the tale of three individuals who attempt to share a melody with all those people out there in the dark…and how the music of that moment defined the rest of their lives. \n\nDIRECTOR:  JEFFREY SCHWARZ\nPRODUCERS:  JEFFREY SCHWARZ\, JOHN BOCCARDO\nEXECUTIVE PRODUCERS:  ALAN EICHLER\, GERALD HERMAN\, SCOTT SIGMAN\nCO-EXECUTIVE PRODUCER:  PAUL MARCARELLI\nCO-PRODUCERS:  AIMÉE FLAHERTY\, TAKI OLDHAM\nCONSULTING PRODUCER:  JEFF WOLK\nASSOCIATE PRODUCERS:  ADAM BARAN\, ELIJAH DRENNER\, JAMES C. SUMMARY:IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE (South Korea)
DESCRIPTION:After years of living abroad\, a middle-aged former actress (Lee Hye-young) has returned to Seoul to reconnect with her past and perhaps make amends.  Over the course of one day in Seoul\, via various encounters—including with her younger sister; a shopkeeper who lives in her converted childhood home; and\, finally\, a well-known film director with whom she would like to make a comeback—we discover her resentments and regrets\, her financial difficulties\, and it’s obvious there is much she is not revealing.  Her big secret is keeping her aloof from the world.  IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE finds the endlessly prolific Hong Sangsoo in a particularly contemplative mood; it’s a film that somehow finds that life is at once full of grace and a sick joke. \nIn her first role for Hong\, Lee\, a prominent theater and screen actress in South Korea\, makes a captivating return to the big screen.  With IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE\, Hong suggests that perhaps the most important things in this life are also the most immediate. \nGenre:   Drama\nRun time: 85 min\nCountry:  South Korea\nLanguage: Korean with English subtitles\nPremiere:  Palm Springs / Coachella Valley\nDirector: /Writer:  Hong Sang-soo\nPrincipal Cast: Yunhee Cho\, Lee Hye-yeong\, Hae-hyo Kwon\nWebsite: http://www.cinemaguild.com/theatrical/infrontofyourface.html\nDistributor:  The Cinema Guild \n  \nFestivals & Awards: \nCannes Film Festival \nOfficial Selection – New York Film Festival \n  \nTickets:  Free to 2022 DFS members.  Non-members $15 cash at the door.  Doors unlock at 9:30 AM for complimentary coffee.  Film begins promptly at 10:00. \nCovid Restrictions:  Photo ID\, Proof of full vaccination including booster shot\,  Seating is socially distanced.  Please allow 2 empty seats between you and another party and do not sit directly behind anyone.

SUMMARY:OUT OF EXILE (USA)
DESCRIPTION:Many people know the photos of Fred Stein but few know his name. His street scenes of Paris in the 1930s and New York in the 1940s and his portraits of famous personalities are well-known. This film seeks out this forgotten photographer. Who was this man who fled the Nazis\, first to Paris and then to New York\, and who\, despite such upheaval\, had a positive\, often humorous view of the world?  He was a pioneer of handheld street photography in Paris in the 1930s using the first model of the Leica camera.
