MY KING / MON ROI (France)

August 6, 2016 @ 9:20 am to approx. 11:45 am

PREVIEW

Tony (Emmanuelle Bercot, in a performance that won her the Best Actress Award at Cannes) and Georgio (Vincent Cassel) are an odd match—or so Tony’s brother Solal (Louis Garrel) thinks when she tells him that they’re falling quickly, recklessly in love.  Director Maïwenn’s 4th feature captures the couple’s tempestuous 10-year relationship, in retrospect, as a string of flash points – eruptions, betrayals, tender reconciliations, and life-altering decisions. Maïwenn’s impressive new film is one of French Cinema’s most memorable recent “amour fous” (crazy love.)

“Emmanuelle Bercot (Toni) and Vincent Cassel (Georgio) shine in this simple drama about a couple of extroverts who have too much in common for their relationship to be everlasting. We learn all about this roller coaster ride of a marriage via Toni’s reflective thoughts as she recovers from knee surgery after a skiing accident which we witness, partially, in the opening scene. The thrill of this flashback technique holds us suspended, most particularly concerning Georgio’s fate.”  A Sliver of Film

“Bercot is heartbreaking, and Cassel has never been better… it’s clear that Maïwenn has something to say – and a clear, strong style with which to express it.”

– Peter Debruge, Variety
